U.S. exports of textiles and apparel declined

U.S. textile and apparel exports fell 3.75% to $9.907 billion from January to May 2023, with declines in major markets including Canada, China and Mexico.
In contrast, exports to the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the Dominican Republic increased.
In terms of categories, garment exports increased by 4.35%, while fabric, yarn and other exports declined.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA), U.S. textile and apparel exports fell by 3.75% to $9.907 billion in the first five months of 2023, compare with $10.292 billion in the same period last year.
Among the top ten markets, textile and clothing shipments to the Netherlands increased by 23.27% in the first five months of 2023 to $20.6623 million. Exports to the United Kingdom (14.40%) and the Dominican Republic (4.15%) also increased. However, shipments to Canada, China, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico and Japan saw a drop of up to 35.69%. During this period, the United States provided Mexico with $2,884,033 million worth of textiles and clothing, followed by Canada with $2,240.976 million and Honduras with $559.20 million.

In terms of categories, from January to May this year, garment exports increased by 4.35% year-on-year to US$3.005094 billion, while fabric exports fell by 4.68% to US$3.553589 billion. During the same period, exports of yarn and cosmetic and miscellaneous goods decreased by 7.67 percent to $1,761.41 million and 10.71 percent to $1,588.458 million, respectively.
U.S. textile and apparel exports increased by 9.77 percent to $24.866 billion in 2022, compared to $22.652 billion in 2021. In recent years, US textile and apparel exports have remained in the range of $22-25 billion per year. It was $24.418 billion in 2014, $23.622 billion in 2015, $22.124 billion in 2016, $22.671 billion in 2017, $23.467 billion in 2018, and $22.905 billion in 2019. In 2020, that figure dropped to $19.330 billion due to the pandemic.
